Wine Styles

It's hard to say Central Otago without adding 'Pinot'.

Our region has made its name from Pinot Noir, with a variety of stunning expressions being crafted in the numerous sub-regions. Central Otago is also renowned for producing excellent aromatics, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Pinot Noir

Central Otago’s flagship variety whose reputation increases as the region and its vines mature. Fragrant, lush fruit underpinned by taut structure, silky texture and true intensity.

Aromatics

The region is becoming well known for Riesling; plus smart Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Styles range from austerely dry to decadently sweet but always sparkling fruit and precise structure.

Sauvignon Blanc

Mineral and gunflint with herbaceousness overlaid by pineapple and passionfruit. Crisp linear structure, refreshing acidity and dry, stony finish are hallmarks.

Chardonnay

Citrus and mineral characters, tightly structured, fine-bodied and sophisticated; can be reserved when young but unfold with great complexity and elegance.

Other Varieties

Perfumed and pretty rosé wines, frequently made by saignee method make delicious aperitifs; and firm, complex yet delicate Methode Traditionelle wines garner critical recognition. Gruner Veltliner and small blocks of Gamay, Merlot, Saint Laurant and Chenin Blanc can also be found. Emerging wine styles including Blanc de Noir, orange and natural wines are also popular.

Sparkling

Based on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reflecting fresh apple, firm stone fruit, supported by subtle yeast autolysis within fine integrated acidity.
