Sustainability

Our sustainable approach

Organic, biodynamic and regenerative viticulture has taken deep root here, and these aren’t just ideals; they’re part of a deeper philosophy and evolving relationship with the land. Each year, the vines reach further into the earth, and the wines speak more clearly of their origin.

Perfect conditions

Central Otago now leads New Zealand in organic certification, with more than 30% of vineyards farmed organically. The region’s dry, sunny climate and low disease pressure provide ideal conditions for these approaches, allowing growers to farm with minimal intervention.

Our approach

Sustainability here is practical as much as philosophical. Many vineyards employ cover crops to build soil health and attract beneficial insects, compost and organic mulches to restore natural fertility, and sheep grazing to manage under-vine growth without machinery. Others use biodynamic preparations and compost teas to stimulate soil life and strengthen vine resilience. Drip irrigation and moisture monitoring ensure efficient water use, while renewable energy, electric vehicles, and lightweight bottles reduce the region’s carbon footprint.

Together, these practices reflect a shared belief that healthy soils and balanced ecosystems are the foundation of great wine, and that true sustainability begins with care for the land itself.
