Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir: the main character

In the story of Central Otago wine, Pinot Noir takes centre stage. It has defined this remote southern region and draws audiences from around the world, from wine lovers who travel great distances to taste it, to the writers who spread its reputation, to the harvesters, cellar hands, and interns who arrive each year to play their part.

Our Pinot Noir captivates with purity, intensity, and complexity, born of high altitude, rocky soils, and a climate of striking contrasts. Warm, sun-drenched days encourage optimal ripening, while cool nights preserve bright acidity, delicate aromatics, and vibrancy. The rugged terrain imparts natural structure and minerality, producing wines that are simultaneously lively, precise, and expressive of their origin.

Sparkling wine shows a different side of Pinot Noir’s personality and has become one of Central Otago’s most exciting frontiers. This land creates wines of finesse and verve, and is a natural home for méthode traditionnelle and other sparkling styles. Often blended with Chardonnay, these wines capture the region’s energy, purity and altitude-driven elegance.

Rosé highlights Pinot Noir’s lifted aromatics and delicate tannin structure creating playful, precise wines whose juicy freshness make them a favourite on a scorching summer’s day.

Blanc de Noir, a white wine made from Pinot Noir, captures the vibrancy and aromatic elegance of our signature grape in a lighter, fresher form. The cool nights allow the fruit to retain bright red-berry aromas, delicate florals, and crisp acidity.

Other varieties

While Central Otago is best known for Pinot Noir, the region’s story does not begin and end there.

A mix of other varieties including Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris continue to shape the region’s broader identity.
