Our Role
Who We Are, Where We Came From, and Where We’re Headed
Central Otago Winegrowers Association (COWA) was formed in the late 1980's when the early pioneering winegrowers released the first commercial Central Otago wine from the 1987 vintage. As a young wine region, many of Central Otago’s producers came of age together, sharing knowledge, resources, and a common vision for quality. This collective approach, combined with a strong focus on Pinot Noir (which accounts for more than 80% of plantings), has shaped the way the region presents itself to the world.
Today, COWA represents a diverse and evolving community of growers and producers across the region. The association works to support its members through promotion, advocacy, and industry development, while continuing to champion the collaborative spirit that defines Central Otago.
Through events, trade and media engagement, and initiatives both locally and internationally, COWA plays a key role in building awareness and understanding of Central Otago wines. Alongside this, the association supports research, sustainability, and regional projects, ensuring the region continues to develop with a focus on quality, innovation, and long-term stewardship of the land.
